What is GHharbour?
GHharbour is a planned deep-water port and green industrial park on the north shore of Hvalfjörður, adjacent to Grundartangi and 40 km from Reykjavík, for cargo, cruise and industrial use, with renewable power, geothermal heat and shore power planned at every berth.
What are the headline project figures?
The site covers 120 hectares, of which 104.7 hectares are planned for port and industry (67.6 ha industrial, 37.1 ha port) and about 15 hectares are held in reserve. The plan provides for up to 1,000 metres of continuous quay, designed for 18–20 metres of water alongside. Figures are design targets, subject to hydrographic survey, detailed engineering and permits.
How deep will the quay be?
It is planned as Iceland’s deepest quay: designed for 18–20 metres of water alongside, where no Icelandic quay today exceeds about 14 metres (Mjóeyrarhöfn in Reyðarfjörður, 14.2 m). That is deep enough for the largest container ships afloat and most bulk carriers, fully laden. All depths are below chart datum; GHharbour’s figures are design targets, to be confirmed by hydrographic survey.
What is the current planning status?
Hvalfjarðarsveit put the municipal plan amendment on public notice from 15 April to 27 May 2026 and adopted the revised amendment on 29 September 2026; it is with the national planning authority (HMS) for confirmation.
